Perspectives from the Purple Line: Productive Inter-Agency Collaboration for Roads and Transit
Moderator: Ray Biggs, Purple Line Project Director, Maryland Transit Administration
With many transit projects – both rail and bus – sharing road space in urban settings, close collaboration between transit agencies and roadway agencies becomes increasingly essential. Maryland’s Purple Line light-rail project offers transferable lessons learned as this 16-mile route not only shares travel lanes but also crosses 50+ roads in two of the state’s most highly populated counties. Maryland Transit Administration’s partnership with these county DOTs was integral to all phases of the project’s development and delivery, including design review, stakeholder engagement, acceptance and handover of constructed assets, and maintenance limit coordination.
