Strategic Highway Safety Planning: State and Local DOT Partnerships
Moderator: Dr. Tim Kerns, MHSO Director
Â
The Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) is a federally required, data-driven framework that unites government agencies, safety advocates, and the public around shared highway safety priorities. However, realizing its full potential requires local engagement on their public roads. This panel will highlight how the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration’s Highway Safety Office has extended its SHSP framework with local jurisdictions, and how other States can emulate this model to reduce roadway fatalities. The discussion will feature case studies on the tools and technical assistance required to develop Local Strategic Highway Safety Plans and practice state-local partnerships.
