The Maryland Department of Transportation is in the early stages of evaluating how applied artificial intelligence can enhance roadway asset management across Maryland’s transportation network. Through the use of AI, machine learning, and crowdsourced roadway imagery, MDOT is beginning to gain greater visibility into roadway assets and conditions, including guardrails, pavement markings, signage, lighting, and other infrastructure elements that support safety, maintenance, and freight mobility. While measurable cost savings have not yet been fully realized, the initial findings are promising. MDOT is identifying new and expanding use cases that were not part of the original scope and is exploring how this technology may integrate with existing systems to support better decision-making, proactive maintenance, federal compliance, and safer movement of oversized and overweight loads. This session will explore the potential of applied AI to help transportation agencies better understand, monitor, and manage roadway assets more efficiently.
